Up and Down Adventures understands the diverse needs of its clients: some are taking time out of their busy lives to enjoy a little 'me time'; others are looking to start a brand new hobby; and some are keen to test [and perhaps extend] their current skills.

What do you need: to learn to live, or live to learn?

We can provide as much, or as little, support as you require: from one-to-one instructor, to group guide or travel companion. To arrange an informal no-obligations chat with one of our friendly staff, please contact us ... we are here to help!

Now, let's meet the team:

Brian Griffiths

Brian likes to specialise in the 'up' part of Up and Down Adventures. He holds the Mountain Instructor Award [MIA], and has spent much of his adult life attempting to defy the laws of gravity on rock faces and mountains throughout Europe and beyond. Brian has been a Vice President of the British Mountaineering Council, and a member of the boards of Mountain Leader Training UK and Mountain Leader Training England. He is currently a Director of Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Centre. Brian is also a keen caver and sailor.

Ralph Johnson

Ralph likes to specialise in the 'down' part of Up and Down Adventures. He holds the Cave Instructor Certificate [CIC] as well as the Mountain Leader Award [ML], and has been active for many decades both above and below ground on a worldwide level [including trek leader in the Himalayas!]. Ralph is a Controller for the Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation [DCRO] and a co-author of the 'Peak Rigging Guide', and has also produced several 'underground' films.

Other colleagues

During busy periods, we have ready access to additional instructors in order to provide the full range of activities offered by Up and Down Adventures. These part-time colleagues are full-time experts, with accreditation and experience in fields such as canoe coaching and mountain leadership. Whatever outdoor experience that you have in mind, we can provide friendly and expert tuition in a wide variety of activities on land and water.
